Handbag Care Tips: How To Care For Your Handbag

We’re are always willing to spend a fortune on a beautiful designer handbag than on any other item in our wardrobe, justifying our purchase by saying, “this will last me for many years.” There are some quite simple measures you can take to ensure that your precious investment is kept in perfect condition for many years to come.

Store Them Properly

There is the habit of just tossing your handbag onto a haphazard heap at the bottom of your wardrobe. For it to last longer they should be stored the right way, ideally in an upright position in their dust bags or a cotton pillowcase. they should not be stored in plastic or vinyl, these will only trap moisture inside. Always stuff your bags with scarves, sweaters, or acid-free tissue paper, or use a handbag insert made for this purpose. Cross the handles over each other to avoid wear on the bag and unclip any removable straps for long-term storage.

Protect the Lining

Do not leave cosmetics and liquids scattered about in your handbag, always use a pouch to store them. This will protect the handbag lining from spills and keep you organised. Avoid storing click pens at all cost, opting for pens with caps instead. Better yet, put those in your pouch too, in case of dreaded ink leaks.

Remove Stains the Right Way

The first step is to know what type of stain you’re dealing with, as that will dictate the removal method e.g stain removal on leather will be different from that of canvas.  Take care not to wipe on any areas other than the affected part, otherwise you could spread the discoloration elsewhere.

Practice Routine Maintenance

When it comes to daily handbag maintenance, here are a few best practices.

  1. Always Keep your bag out of direct sunlight.
  2. Rotate which handbag you carry regularly so that they don’t wear out too quickly.
  3. Avoid handling your bag if your hands are dirty or have lotion or cream on them.
  4. Regular use of a leather moisturizer will keep the leather supple and free of cracks.
  5. Wipe your bag down on a weekly basis (when in use) with a soft cloth.
